Why We Age: A Simple Guide to Skin Ageing

Ageing is something every person experiences, yet few of us understand what is actually happening beneath the surface of our skin. Wrinkles, sagging, age spots, and dryness are not caused by one single thing. They are the result of many biological processes happening at once. This article breaks down why we age in simple terms and what it means for your skin.

Two types of skin ageing

Scientists usually divide skin ageing into two categories. Intrinsic ageing is the natural ageing that happens with time. It is driven by genetics and the gradual slowing down of cellular processes. Extrinsic ageing is caused by external factors such as sun exposure, smoking, pollution, diet, and lifestyle. Together, these two types determine how quickly your skin ages.

Intrinsic ageing is inevitable. Even if you lived in a bubble, your skin would eventually become thinner, drier, and less elastic. Extrinsic ageing, however, is largely under your control. This is why two people of the same age can look very different. One person's skin may reflect decades of sun and smoking, while another's shows the gentler effects of time.

Collagen and elastin decline

Collagen is the protein that gives skin its firmness and structure. Elastin allows skin to stretch and bounce back. From your mid-twenties onward, collagen production begins to slow. By the time you reach your fifties, you may have lost nearly half of the collagen in your skin.

As collagen and elastin decline, the skin becomes thinner and less able to resist gravity. Fine lines deepen into wrinkles, and the face can begin to sag. The process is natural, but it happens much faster when UV light, smoking, and sugar break these proteins down more quickly than the body can replace them.

Slower cell turnover

Young skin renews itself about every 28 days. In older skin, this process can take 40 to 60 days or longer. Dead cells linger on the surface longer, which makes skin look dull, rough, and less radiant. It also means blemishes and dark marks take longer to fade.

This slower turnover is linked to reduced activity in stem cells and lower levels of growth factors. The skin's repair systems still work, but they become less efficient. Ingredients like retinoids and alpha hydroxy acids can help speed up cell turnover and improve texture.

Loss of fat and bone

Ageing is not just about skin. The fat pads beneath the skin and the bone structure of the face also change over time. Cheeks may flatten, temples can hollow, and jawlines become less defined. These structural changes create shadows and contribute to a tired or aged appearance.

Because the skin has less support from below, it can appear looser even if the skin itself has not changed much. This is one reason why ageing is best understood as a whole-face process rather than just a skin issue.

Hormonal changes

Hormones play a major role in skin ageing, especially around menopause. Oestrogen helps maintain collagen, moisture, and skin thickness. When oestrogen levels drop, skin can become noticeably drier, thinner, and more prone to wrinkles. Many women notice rapid changes in their skin during this time.

Testosterone also influences skin. It affects oil production and hair growth. Hormonal shifts can trigger adult acne, increased facial hair, or changes in skin texture. Understanding these changes can help you adjust your skincare routine to match your skin's needs.

Cellular ageing and telomeres

Inside every cell, the chromosomes that carry your DNA are protected by caps called telomeres. Each time a cell divides, these caps get a little shorter. When they become too short, the cell can no longer divide and may enter senescence. Senescent cells are sometimes called zombie cells because they remain alive but no longer function properly. They can also release inflammatory signals that damage neighbouring cells.

Telomere shortening is one of the biological clocks of ageing. While you cannot stop it completely, lifestyle factors such as stress, poor diet, smoking, and lack of sleep can speed it up. Conversely, healthy habits may help slow it down.

Oxidative stress and inflammation

Oxidative stress happens when there are more free radicals in the body than antioxidants can neutralise. Free radicals are produced by normal metabolism, UV exposure, pollution, smoking, and processed foods. Over time, oxidative stress damages DNA, proteins, and cell membranes.

Chronic low-level inflammation, sometimes called inflammageing, is another key player. It keeps the immune system in a constant state of low alert, which gradually wears down tissues. In the skin, this contributes to redness, sensitivity, breakdown of collagen, and slower healing.

Mitochondrial decline

Mitochondria are the energy factories inside your cells. They convert nutrients into the energy that powers repair, renewal, and defence. As mitochondria become less efficient with age, cells have less energy to maintain themselves. This affects everything from collagen production to barrier function.

Some skincare ingredients and lifestyle habits aim to support mitochondrial health. These include antioxidants, certain peptides, exercise, and adequate sleep. The science is still evolving, but supporting cellular energy is an exciting frontier in anti-ageing research.

What you can do about it

You cannot stop ageing, but you can influence how quickly it shows on your skin. The most important steps are also the simplest. Wear sunscreen every day. Do not smoke.
